Legale Produktion von Opium und Mohnstroh im Jahr 2012

Opium und Mohnstroh bilden die Grundlage für die Herstellung von Arzneimittel (meist Schmerzmittel) auf der Basis Codein, Thebain und Morphin. Halbsynthetische Stoffe wie Heroin werden ebenfalls hieraus gewonnen.

Opium wird nur in Indien legal produziert. Die Produktionsmenge lage bei 470 Tonnen bzw. 52 Morphinäquivalent. 70% davon gingen in die USA, weitere 25% nach Japan.

Mohnstroh wird je nach Verteilung der Inhaltsstoffe in drei Gruppen unterteilt: Reich an Morphin, Codein oder Thebain; englisch: poppy straw (M) bzw. (C) bzw. (T).

Verteilung des Anbaus von Morphin-reichem Mohnstroh:

  • Australia (174 tons in morphine equivalent, accounting for 44 per cent of global production)
  • France (92 tons, or 23 per cent)
  • Spain (83 tons, or 21 per cent)
  • Turkey (14 tons, or 4 per  cent)
  • Austria, China, Hungary, Slovakia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 8 per cent
